Tamara Hicks

I graduated from North Carolina Central University in May 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. I obtained my Master’s in Science degree in Mental Health Counseling from Capella University in September 2014. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. My experiences include the roles of a Child Welfare Specialist with Mecklenburg County and in the private sector experience population with Child/Adolescent/Adults/Family Individual and Group Counselor. Specialties include treating mental disorders within the child, adolescent, and adult population related to behavior, emotional and some physical impairments. I am dedicated to helping individuals, couples and their families overcome obstacles that prevent them from enjoying healthy lives. I can combine strong skills in administration, organization, human resource skill set, and I am customer service driven. Maintaining integrity and confidentiality regarding client information is at the forefront of my counseling practice. Helping others to help themselves is my motto.

My counseling approach includes person-centered therapy, family systems, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. I may pull from other theories and incorporate various techniques depending on the specific needs of the client and/or family. The techniques may include but are not limited to dialogue, behavior modification, reframing of thoughts, realization, role play, communication techniques and expressive arts. With children under the age of 10, I utilize play therapy and expressive arts as well as cognitive behavioral strategies, if appropriate. During our first meeting we will work together to establish realistic and attainable goals for you to achieve. These goals are flexible, and we may modify them throughout the counseling process as your needs change. Active participation in and out of the session is essential to your success. You can expect to work inside and outside of the counseling settings. On occasion, I may suggest that you read books, take some tests, or interact with some assignments. Change is seldom quick and easy; therefore, your consistent and ongoing effort will be necessary.

I obtained a Master’s of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Walden University in May of 2014. I am trained to work with individual, families, and groups. I also have extensive knowledge and sensitivity in working with adolescents and adults, and those suffering from moderate to severe mental health symptoms. I am a National Counseling Certification (NCC #339016) and have received additional training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Play Therapy and Motivational Interviewing techniques. I have two years of counseling experience. At present, I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. My clientele includes children, adolescents, and adults, in individual, family, and group therapy to address a variety of needs, including, but not limited to, situational stressors, family relations, interpersonal relationships, mental health issues, life span issues, psychiatric illnesses, and substance use disorders and other addictive behaviors.

Counseling involves the sharing of personal problems, concerns, and stories with a professional who is skilled at helping the client or clients come to a resolution or solution about the particular situation. Counseling is a relatively short-term, interpersonal; theory based professional activity guided by ethical and legal standards that focuses on helping persons resolve developmental issues, situational problems, and more complex personal diagnosis

The general goals for the client are that he/she can identify the issues, develop a plan of action, and then implement that plan. This is a very personal process. I believe that it is educational and developmental by nature.

My approach to counseling is rooted in many different theoretical orientations. I believe that the client or clients have the solutions to their dilemmas within one’s self. We have the freedom to choose what directions our life takes and the responsibility to take control of that freedom. Therefore, the counselor does not have the “answers” to the client’s “problem” but is a facilitator of the process that helps the client take responsibility and action then come to a resolution that will ultimately improve their quality of life. However, my approach to counseling is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Person-Centered Therapy.
